Good afternoon, welcome to WMNF’s Radioactivity. I’m Rob Lorei. Coming up in a moment- the governor is getting married tomorrow in St. Petersburg and there will be a demonstration by groups that are angry that the Governor recently supported Amendment Two to Florida’s constitution which bans gay marriage here in Florida.

But first- three listener comments about yesterday’s program which featured a spokesperson for the National Association Of Broadcasters and three local broadcast engineers who were offering advice about the upcoming transition from analog to digital television. Here’s what some listeners had to say after the program.

A new groups seeking “marriage equality for all”---called Impact-Florida is planning to hold a demonstration outside the First United Methodist Church of Saint Petersburg while Governor Charlie Crist marries his fiancé Carol Rome tomorrow evening at the First United Methodist Church in downtown St. Petersburg tomorrow night.

Following the ceremony, the demonstrators plan to continue their vigil outside the wedding reception at the Renaissance Vinoy Resort.

We discussed the issue with two of the organizers of tomorrow night’s demonstration: Lorna Bracewell who is a local singer songwriter and Yasmin Jones. Both are with Impact-Florida.

Gay unions

I am not the one to judge anyone but I think that there are other ways to get what they want. I have read that through living wills and power of attorney they can get the what they want..It seems to me that it is not the title of marrage that the gays want, they just want the benifits of couples that have made an agreement to live there lifes together forever..I feel if the gays want to get things done for themselves, that protesting is not the way, educate yourselves in the law and go that route first.

Marriage is a commitment between two people and it is everyone's inalienable right to pursue that commitment regardless of gender. My partner and I have been together for 22 years - likely longer then most "heterosexuals" yet we are not afforded the opportunity to secure the benefits that heterosexual couples enjoy. It's not about power's of attorney or living wills - it's about society embracing all couples wanting to commit for isn't "marriage" what our society is based on? And the opportunity to secure the benefits that are associated with that union -health care, social security, contracts and the simple recongnition of the union as a sanctioned commitment. American's think that they are the innovators - an advanced society - yet we are not spinning a new wheel here - we are behind the times and not globally open minded - as in other industrialized countries. We are continuing to propegate bigotry, hatred, exclusion and those old puritanical ideals still persist. Our families, our religion, our friends embrace our union - I don't care what society thinks - I believe legally it would be the just and right thing to happen next.

Love and Grow

I have always believed in committment but not always in the contract of marriage. Marriage existed before the liscense did, so are those commitments any less valid? I think people should fight to win the war, not every battle. I believe that the Gov should acknowledge civil unions for reasons of benefits, but the union of man and woman was created to reproduce, and be married. So i feel a compromise is in order. Have a gay ceremony and a life partner, we have to win the war this is a battle we can work out. Everyone just GROW!

Tacky just doesn't say it.

Hi Rob… when it comes to “Amendment Two” the sheeple have spoken… not all of them… but the voting majority of them have spoken. Along with that majority, an elected representative voice of that majority publicly supported that particular voting populace… welcome to the Democratic Republic of America. Right, wrong or indifferent, it seems to me that the Governor was simply doing his job… being a representative of that voting majority. In your interview with Impact-Florida you specifically ask your guests if they intended to use “bullhorns” to disrupt the Governors wedding ceremony… they said “No”… the next night while watching the news coverage of the Governors wedding what should me ears detect??? BULLHORNS… were disrupting the new First Lady of Florida’s wedding ceremony. Your guest’s did not seem to like being compared to Rev. Fred Phelps… to bad… I was also impressed with the way your guest’s snickered their way through the use of the word “tacky” to describe Impact-Florida’s tactics. Your guest’s were right… “Tacky” doesn't come close to describe them. However... “Westboro-Wannabe’s” does seem come closer.

2 wrongs not right

Amendment 2 is a hate crime. Those who voted FOR this constitutional amendment are ignorant of the purpose of the constitution and the actual impact of the amendment. Sad.Irresponsible. Protesting outside of Crist's wedding is not right either. 2 wrongs do not make a right. Impact got extensive media coverage- but does this action support a 'love one another' stance or does it give their opponents more ammunition to further divide and conquer the public?

What the...

Although I disagree with Christ supporting the ammendment, protesting outside someone's wedding shows a complete lack of respect for the institution of marraige which these people are demonstrating the right to have. It really annoys me that since they cannot "win" through the bureaucratic process, they will stoop to such behavior. It serves no purpose other than to create tension and anamosity. What was the goal there? To change people's minds? To change the governer's mind? To get on newsreels and footage showing them as part of an angry mob? To incite uncomfortable energy? I am libertarian minded, and believe everyone should be treated as individuals, without regard for group affiliation such as religion, sexual affinity, skin color, etc... I also believe highly in the first ammendment, and the rest of the United States Bill of Rights. I am not suggesting that people should not have the right to do it, I just believe it shows a lack of professionalism, and dare I say, class, to be protesting a wedding? Reminds me of that church from Oklahoma that sends protesters to funerals of the Iraq war veterans.

Ignorance and MisInformation...

Ah yes...as you can see by reading these posts that most people don't understand struggles of those oppressed and what it actually means to wake up in a world where you are not EQUAL. America WAKE UP...the most frightening thing here are the ignorant comments like... "It really annoys me that since they cannot "win" through the bureaucratic process they will stoop to such behavior," ok yeah let's talk rationally on this...let's see if you did your research you would find out that the people who make the decisions here buddy are primarily straight, religious, white guys that are VERY homophobic and are paid by religious orientated groups in their campaigns. The same people who said "If God wanted the races to mix HE wouldn't have put us on separate continents." Ok...and THIS ONE... "Disrupting the new First Lady of Florida’s wedding ceremony," Hum...if you got your facts STRAIGHT you would know that our group of citizens didn't have a bull horn at all we were committed to PEACE! The guy making the most noise was the Crazy CHRISTIAN GUY screaming how we are all going to burn in Hell and making fun of us and walking up to us with a GIANT SIGN THAT STATES HOMO SEX IS A SIN." I wonder how your weak, uninformed minds would handle someone in your face screaming about how you are nothing and an abomination!!! I WONDER THEN IF YOU WOULD STAND UP FOR YOURSELF? And of course my favorite one that they just keep repeating because their brains are so feeble and weak riddled with the bullets of hate...they can not produce any other words to coin their homophobia the classic "THE BIBLE SAYS ADAM AND EVE NOT ADAM AND STEVE.." People please open a book or just surf the net...the human mind is such a terrible thing to waste...or are you feeling so little inside that you just can't help but pick on Gay people because the KKK is in the closet right now? Anyone who believes and I Mean REALLY believes that our country is their homeland and understands that DISCRIMINATION IS WRONG should get up, stand up and fight against this IGNORANCE. Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Separate and Unequal

My partner and I have been together for over 15 years. We've spent quite a bit of money on legal fees to set up wills, power of attorney, etc...all things that heterosexuals get *automatically* simply by signing their marriage licenses. Most long-term gay/lesbian couples have these documents, but their validity has often been ignored or challended in courts by hostile family members, hospitals, etc. Is that fair? I do not believe so. The only way these rights will be honored is if the STATE honors them. All I want are the legal/civil rights and benefits that heterosexuals enjoy, and you can call them whatever you want. "Marriage" as defined by religions should remain that way. Our secular government, though, should not be in the business of "marriage"...just legal/civil commitments. If it will make the religious freakos happy, you can call them civil unions, or domestic partnerships, or "Shirley" for all I care. Just give me my rights and DON'T make my civil rights a matter of popular vote! As for Chain-gang Charlie and his trophy bride: he is a major closet-case and this is a marriage of convenience to further his political career. Eventually, his charade will be revealed. But I don't believe that Impact Florida or the Uhurus should have protested at his wedding. Yes he's a public figure and a major hypocrite, but I don't believe either group generated much empathy for their respective causes by what they did.

Tacky just doesn't say it... 2

Hi Rose… my apologies, as I said, I was watching the news report of protesters at the Governors wedding and heard the “Bozo-with-a-bullhorn” in the background. As there was no mention of the protesters being protested, I simply assumed. My error however, still does not change my opinion about protesting at weddings or funerals… it’s wrong and distracts from the cause. Now… as for me standing up for myself in the face of others… you won’t see me standing up in the middle of a target range. As for me standing up for my rights… I’m a middle-class, middle-aged, married-with-kids, out-of-work, white-guy… my three cats have more rights than I do.
