WMNF Community Radio partners with student government of USF to broadcast station on HD2.
TAMPA, FL - WMNF Community Radio 88.5 FM in Tampa is excited to announce its new partnership with Bulls Radio, the student radio station of the University of South Florida. In the first partnership of its kind, Bulls Radio will be broadcast over the HD2 airwaves of WMNF beginning September 5th.
Until now, Bulls Radio is only broadcast on AM in the vicinity of the USF Tampa campus. This new partnership with WMNF will broadcast Bulls Radio over the greater Tampa Bay Area, including on all four USF campuses.
“Bulls Radio student-programmers will gain the experience of working for a full-power FM station in a major radio market,” said Bulls Radio station manager Michael Rañon..
“In an effort to remain relevant and to find the next generation of media journalists,” said WMNF station manager Jim Bennett, “we must offer younger people the chance to be involved with media in a way that appeals to them and their peers.”
WMNF program director Randy Wynne hopes that Bulls Radio programmers will some day have their own shows on our main HD1 signal, 88.5 FM. “The college radio format of Bulls Radio is currently unavailable on Tampa Bay radio,” said Wynne, “and we will be helping fill that void by expanding their signal.”
There are about 20 unique HD channels in the Tampa Bay market. Unlike satellite radio, HD is free to anyone who has an HD receiver. Most programming content is also available on stations’ web sites. Bill Brown, WMNF’s engineer, says that CD-quality HD radio is a technology that is rapidly emerging and “gives students the opportunity to listen to Bulls Radio at the beach.”
The St. Petersburg, Lakeland, and Sarasota campuses of USF do not have student radio stations. “Bulls Radio on WMNF HD2 will connect the four USF campuses together,” Brown said.
The kickoff date corresponds with the Bulls Radio broadcast of the first USF football game of the season. Student broadcasts for a number of sports on Bulls Radio will now be broadcast all over the Tampa Bay area. There will also be a special Bulls Radio HD-2 broadcast and open house at 1pm on Sept 4th, at the WMNF studios, located at 1210 E Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Tampa.
