This Is Our Youth on The Source

Tune in this Sunday night at 7:00 for "This Is Our Youth," a play by Kenneth Lonergan. In this radio version, Mark Ruffalo reprises his stage role.
Kenneth Lonergan is also the author of "Lobby Hero," performed at TBPAC two years ago. He co-wrote the films Analyze This and Gangs of New York. "This Is Our Youth" was performed locally at the Silver Meteor this past January.
The play has become very popular among the younger theater generation for its edgy issues and modern themes. Many popular film actors have played its roles, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Casey Affleck, Matt Damon and Mark Ruffalo.
The play takes place in Dennis Ziegler's apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in March 1982. Dennis's friend Warren Straub, a dejected 19-year-old, has just been kicked out of his house and stolen $15,000 from his abusive lingerie-tycoon father. Dennis, wily and domineering, spends some of the money on cocaine, hoping to sell it to a friend of his for much more. Jessica Goldman, an "anxiously insightful" fashion student, comes over, and Warren hopes that he can use the money to entice her into bed.
The play explores adolescence and maturity, as well as the Reagan Era in which it takes place; the characters feeling adrift in a country of '60s-style liberalism.
