Top Ten Reasons to Boogie on Down to Tropical Heatwave!

By Amy Beeman

As anyone who listens to WMNF knows, Tropical Heatwave is just around the corner, on May 9th and 10th. In its 33rd year, the annual festival in Ybor City is hands-down the best community music event of the year. If you’re still on the fence, here is a list of some of the reasons why you should hustle-yer-butt over to Tropical Heatwave.

  1. The Line-up. Sixty bands in two nights. What?! Yep, it’s true. Where else are you going to find a cornucopia of high-calibre bands all playing for your enjoyment? And you don’t even have to leave town. Sure, the idea of trying to see so many bands may make your head swim, in a warm, happy kid-at-Christmas kind of way, but oh the possibilities. Which leads to the next reason...

  2. Choose Your Own Adventure. No two people need have the same Heatwave experience, except for those who are traversing the delights of musical entertainment together. Pick the bands you know you like, go check out the ones you’ve never heard of, do your research, check the schedule and set your course, or just see where the wind blows you. It makes no matter. It is impossible not to hear great music, wherever you go. Even if some genres of music are not your usual bag, each band was chosen because they’re hella talented. Prepare to be awed.

  3. Find New Bands to Love. Is anything better than not knowing what to expect from a band and having your mind blown? How about when you can’t take your eyes off a band because they’re just so fun to watch, or you can’t be still because the music is so infectious? Yeah, you’re going to enjoy the bands you already know you like, but the feeling of discovering a new love is like nothing else.

  4. The Value. Seriously, you can hardly go to a show for less than $40 anymore ($50 at the gate), especially after taxes and fees. Plus, this is a chance to see as many bands as you can in two nights. Some of the bands are local gems, and others are from far away places and bringing their incredible talents right to you!

  5. Contributing to the Best Lil’ Radio Station in The Nation! From the perspective of this listener and community member, WMNF is such a beloved and important part of the Tampa Bay Area. They do so much for us; host great events, introduce us to new music, play old favorites we don’t hear on commercial radio, enlighten us with vital news and create a forum for discussion about important topics. If you can’t always contribute, here is your chance. It’s a win-win.

  6. Co-mingle With the Other Cool Kids. Tropical Heatwave brings out the music lovers of the area. It’s delightful to be surrounded by people who are just out to appreciate the talents and hard work of so many bands and musicians. We are all there to have a great time and shake our money makers, enjoy life and leave the regular stresses of the day at home. It’s a lovely vibe. The festival creates a wonderful sense of community whether we’re meeting new people or running into old friends.

  7. People Watching and Fun with Fashion. There is something liberating about going to music festivals. It’s the perfect opportunity to pull out those beloved random articles of clothing that just don’t work in the day to day, i.e. let your freak flags fly. Heatwave is no Burning Man, but there’s everything from Khaki shorts and t-shirts to Skinny Jeans and crop tops, Beards and tattoos-a-plenty, Birkenstocks, boots, pompadours, hippie skirts, probably something leather, mustaches, flip-flops and the odd mom- jean. Not to mention checking out what the bands are wearing. Many-a-musician make for some sweet eye candy, and they are pretty good about being on the cusp of cool fashion. Overall, it’s always a mishmash of interesting people.

  8. The Venues. This year’s bands will be spread out to a couple of different spots than in years past. While the beloved New World Brewery and Cuban Club and its three stages will host again this year, additionally bands will play at Crowbar, The Orpheum, Carmine’s Courtyard and The Market on 7th. Yay for bar-hopping! Plus there is a nice mix of indoor and outdoor settings. And on Saturday, for extra fun, we can ride on a jolley-trolley, which will be looping the several block expanse of the festival for only $2 per ride or $5 for limitless rides. Think night breezes and probable drunken revelry, big-city-late-night-public-transport style. Good fun!

  9. Two Words. Food Trucks. Sure, Ybor City has lots of great restaurants, but who has time for a sit down dining experience when there are so many bands to check out. Luckily, the good folks at WMNF thought of that and invited a nice mix of quality food truck options to keep your bellies full and energy up. Whether you feel like Thai, burgers, sandwiches, Latin food, or caribbean fare, you can grab a quick and delicious bite. Of course, there are also plenty of places to get big ol’ slices of yummy, greasy pizza in Ybor.

  10. It’s good for you. Need there be any explanation for this one? Music feeds the soul. It brings people together. It’s fun, and therefore alleviates stress, so you live longer. Maybe that’s a stretch, but even if you don’t live longer because of Tropical Heatwave, at least you’ll have improved your life by having yourself a mighty fine time. It’s the right thing to do. Make it happen people.
