Nature Coast Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society, April 8 Meeting Announcement
Tuesday, April 08
The Nature Coast Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society meets the second Tuesday of every month at 7:00 PM at The Land O Lakes Community Center, 5401 Land O Lakes Blvd/US 41, Land O Lakes, 34639, between SR 52 and SR 54. Land O Lakes Community Center is located on the west side of the highway. The subject of the Tuesday, April 8, 2014 meeting is John Bartram (1699-1777): First American Native Plant Expert, presented by Adrienne Condon. Adrienne has spent most of her career teaching English at the university level, but gardening has always been her hobby. These two interests intersected when her dissertation for a PhD at USF focused on John Bartram and his connection with botanists in England during the 1700s. John Bartram started out as a Pennsylvania farmer, but became interested in American native plants. He became the best American natural botanist and co-owner of the largest international nursery business. In his sixties he traveled to Florida to collect botanical specimens. His son, William Bartram, the naturalist and illustrator, accompanied his father on this groundbreaking trip. Meetings of the Chapter are free, and all interested parties are invited to attend, to bring questions about their yard, and participate in light refreshments and the native plant drawing. Telephone inquiries are taken by Sandy at (727) 376-7663. Chapter website: http://www.pasconativeplants.org.
