Tom Petty was born and raised in Florida, just up the road in Gainesville. So it’s only fitting that Florida’s best community radio station will be the only radio station in the state celebrating his 60th birthday with a full night of Tom Petty’s music. Like Tom Petty, 88.5 WMNF got its start in the late 70’s and both are still going strong over 30 years later. Both Petty and WMNF rejected the bland sounds of classic rock radio at the end of the 70’s, moving instead to blend Byrds-y folk with Punk, New Wave, Garage rock and dash of Dylaneque songwriting. The result was a unique sound that’s still going strong today.
In honor of our home-state hero, WMNF presents Just Do Me Like That: The Tom Petty 60th Birthday Tribute. Skipper’s Smokehouse will be rocking from 5:00 pm until Midnight on Saturday Oct 23rd as 17 bands offer up 50 Tom Petty originals, from 26 albums in a span of 6 hours. Each band will interpret three Petty songs in their own style for a non-stop music event that will be remembered for years to come. WMNF Music Director Lee “Flee” Courtney predicts “this could be the best tribute show ever – I’ve had more bands ask to be in this show than any other since I started these Tributes 8 years ago. Petty’s one of us and we love him.” Look for songs from Petty’s entire career, from his very first album to his most recent release, “Mojo,” with selections from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Traveling Wilburys, Tom Petty solo, and Mudcrutch.
