Friday May 10:
Keith Secola and Band of Wild Indians - A powerful performer and a member of the Native American Music Hall of Fame
Paul Thorn (solo) - Longtime favorite WMNF live artist/singer and storyteller; in solo mode his homespun charm and self-deprecating humor are on full display
Selwyn Birchwood Band - Winner of 2013 International Blue Challenge in Memphis: out of 230 entries he won Best Artist and Best Guitarist
Mercy Brothers - A new group of veteran musicians from southwest Louisiana playing a very infectious brand of Louisiana revival music and hillbilly gospel; in concert they rock!
American Aquarium -Whether you call it alt-country, Americana, or roots rock, one thing is for certain about this Raleigh NC band: Their music is a fresh voice that borrows from many forms of the Amreserican songbook
Applebutter Express - Utterly charming ukes and vocals from this boy-girl led group, fortified with fiddle and upright bass, very popular with the jamband crowd, featuring stick-in-your-head originals and really clever reinterpretations of covers.
Ray Bonneville - A hard driving, blues influenced, song and groove man who often writes about people who live on the fringe of society. Ray’s vibe is loose and soulful. With a greasy guitar style, horn-like harmonica phrasing, smoky vocal style and pulsing foot percussion he immediately rivets audiences.
Rebekah Pulley and the Reluctant Prophets -The St. Pete singer-songwriter is a tireless performer who’s taken the stage at just about every venue and festival you can name. Her new CD, Tralala, infuses her trademark smokey, Southern folk with elements of jazz and the blues and it has been one of the most played CDs on WMNF in 2013.
Saturday, May 11
Southern Hospitality - A new roots/blues supergroup, Southern Hospitality is comprised of lap steel guitar master Damon Fowler, guitarist extraordinaire JP Soars, and keyboard wizard Victor Wainwright. With echoes of Muscle Shoals and Macon, these musician's musicians draw on their rich heritage of Southern soul, blues, and rock music to create a fresh translation of Americana and Southern roots music with a modern sensibility. The band has been generating a huge buzz with their extraordinary live performances. After their very first show together BluesWax said, "Southern Hospitality after a single gig has significant players in the blues world taking notice. Fowler, Wainwright and Soars share much love for the songs of the South. The hot jazz and funk of New Orleans, classic country, gospel, soul, and blues that became rock 'n' roll in Memphis and went global by way of a trucker named Elvis." Their debut release on Blind Pig Records, Easy Livin', promises to be one of the most exciting CDs of 2013.
Stooges Brass Band - The Stooges Brass Band has been one of the elite brass bands in New Orleans but only recently is receiving the accolades and well deserved recognition of their importance to the music scene of New Orleans. Since 1996, their high energy show on the stage and in the streets has engaged audiences with their innovative blend of traditional New Orleans brass sounds and contemporary hip-hop beats.Whether they are second-lining in the back streets of the Crescent City, or performing across the country, the Stooges Brass Band immerse crowds in a high-energy, cut loose vibe that's contemporary yet deeply rooted in the culturally rich musical legacy of city of New Orleans.
