Support WMNF by coming to our 35th birthday party!
We have two fabulous dance bands, New Groove City with Gumbi Ortiz and The Black Honkeys. The Coliseum is the best dance floor in the southeast. Tickets are at all regular WMNF outlets. We will also be adding young band who wins our New Sounds of the Left Coast competition.
New Groove City with Gumbi Ortiz Gumbi Ortiz is known around the world for his exciting conga performance and his knowledge of rhythm and percussion. For the last 20 years Gumbi has been an integral part of superstar guitarist Al DiMeolas band. He is also a teacher, a session player and leader of Florida based The Latino Projekt - which now has officially became New Groove City. His current seven-piece band is his tightest ever ensemble, a super hot dance band. Folks can't help moving their feet to the insistent beats, and taken with the exotic but earthy sound of the band. If the polyrhythms don't get ya, the group's high spirits most definitely will. WMNF history: Gumbi was the original Latin Jazz and Salsa programmer on WMNF. His current band is
Kenny Walker, bass;
Carlos Marchena, keys;
Laura Lorded, flute;
Butch Thomas, sax;
Eduardo Viadaude, vocals;
and the ol man on congas....
The Black Honkeys We asked some local music experts what is the best dance band, the band who fills dance floors best in Tampa Bay. The consensus is The Black Honkeys. Eight-piece Soul, R & B, and Funk - with horns. Their style is throwback, their sound is timeless and hip. They create a dance party wherever they play.
