Chuck Prophet and the Mission Express Band, plus Peter Mulvey

One of WMNF's favorite live performers of the past decade, with a great new release.

**Chuck Prophet** shapes his restless career with inimitable subtle flair: a vivid parade of razor-edged one-liners camouflaged in a slack-jawed drawl, songs about heartbreak and everyman heroism, drenched in twisted lines of rude Telecaster. At eighteen, he left his native Whittier, CA for San Francisco, which he still calls home, and before too long joined Green on Red, a gang of interloping Arizonans with no small impact on L.A.'s Paisley Underground. During an eight-year run with Green on Red, he cut his first major label session with legendary Memphis producer Jim Dickinson, burned through a couple of big record deals, and ventured a debut solo effort, Brother Aldo (1990). These were the first steps in the career that shaped Prophet into a prolific rock 'n' roll classicist.

With 2000's "The Hurting Business" he won his first invitation to WMNF's Tropical Heatwave. He has played three Heatwaves and headlined a Birthday Bash, plus several WMNF club shows, making him perhaps WMNF's favorite live artist of the 2000s.

His latest album is entitled ¡Let Freedom Ring! Recorded in Mexico City, the recording wanders into the fractured, surreal state of the American Dream and emerges with the most vital document of Prophet's vision, a reflection of life and love for troubled times.

**Peter Mulvey** began as a self-described “city kid” from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He played, wrote, and sang in bands while studying theatre there, and then traveled to Dublin, Ireland, in 1989, where he learned the trade of the street singer. Returning to the States, he relocated to Boston with two self-released CDs in hand: Brother Rabbit Speaks (1992) and Rain (1994). In Boston he took to playing in the subways as a full-time occupation. The seven hour sessions playing to passers-by and commuters not only strengthened his accomplished guitar playing but also sharpened his innate gifts as a communicator. In a few short years he had made the transition to touring songwriter. The road years further seasoned his abilities as a performer. Whether playing solo or with a band in tow, Mulvey has a rare ability to hold an audience’s attention and transport them, using wit, humor, and a subtle but sophisticated melodic and harmonic sensibility to gracefully introduce complex and provocative concepts and characters. Over the past 20 years, Mulvey has pursued a restless, eclectic path as a writer and musician – immersing himself in Tin PanAlley jazz, modern acoustic, poetry, narrative, and Americana stylings.

Melissa Ferrick plus Mal Blum

Since the early 1990s, the accomplished singer-songwriter from New England has compiled a solid string of sonically strong, lyrically rich studio albums. Her trademark is an endearing, emotionally honest first-person lyrical approach driven by her dynamic acoustic sound.

Often described as folk singer, Ferrick's inspiration flows from a love of rock..n' roll. During her impassioned live performances for instance, she'll occasionally crack out a Zeppelin-style riff or tinker with a little Red Hot Chili Peppers vocal improvisation. These touches however, only sharpen the intensity of her wildly popular live shows.

Ferrick ranks among an elite group of female guitarists who'll brave the stage alone, and leave it with the house cheering for more.

WMNF 3rd Annual Blues Blast

A great showcase of blues with one national headliners and our choice of six area bands playing diverse styles of blues that you need to know about (if you don't already).

**Larry Garner**
As the recipient of dozens of blues awards, it's no wonder it's been said over and over that the Baton Rouge raised Larry Garner is one of contemporary blues finest. Garner's no-frills guitar style echoes B.B. King, but it's his fresh songwriting that makes him a major creative force.

**Josh Lamkin & Automatic Heat**
With music burning with soulful passion and rock and roll fire, Josh Lamkin & Automatic Heat deliver high energy original music, and an array of blues, rock, and country covers. Their live show is something you do NOT want to miss.

**Blues Pig**
Sarasota's best blues band, six pieces with harp and sax and a devotion to the classic blues sound.

**Will Vaughn**
Will Vaughn aka Daddy V has been performing over 25 years with such legends as Bo Diddley, Gerald Levert, Bobby Blue Bland, Tyrone Davis, Marvin Sease, Freddy Jackson and more. He brings to the Blues Bash a soul revue: a combination of old skool Motown and new southern soul music.

**R.J. Harman In Company**
Richard “RJ” Harman has been playing the harmonica for six years and has already won numerous music awards and been featured in two full page article's in the Orlando Sentinel. His style is fresh and vibrant; he brings a youthful passion and a love of the Blues, Funk, Jazz, and Shake-a-billy to the stage.

**Joel Sanders Band**
Furious guitar runs, strong melodic content and clean vocals delivered with complement raw, emotional energy, kind of like a modern Derek & the Dominos is what this longtime scene stalwart does and does so well. Sanders has been playing around these parts in tons of rock and groove-oriented bands (Black Honkeys, Freaks Rule, The Crunge, Basic Rock Outfit, Full Fldged Unit) for probably going on 20 years; this is his first more-or-less straight blues project.

**Steve Arvey Horn Band**
Be prepared for some Chicago style Windy City blues and rock with some great saxophone sounds. Steve has performed all over Europe, America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and with many of the world's top blues bands during his three decade career. Few performers can match his showmanship and the joy he brings to his audience because as a performer, while he's on stage he's having so much fun, the folks watching can't help but be effected by the sheer verve of the man.

Eric Clapton 65th Birthday Tribute: Layla/The Album Project

**Four bands re-create the greatest guitar album of all time, 40 years since its release, on Eric Clapton's 65th birthday.**
"Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" is an astonishing evocation of unrequited love. The entire album and especially the title song are celebrated for the real life circumstances as much as for its emotionally involving sound. It reflects Eric Clapton's tortured obsession with the wife (Pattie Boyd) of his best friend (George Harrison). Clapton later admitted that "being Derek was a cover for the fact that I was trying to steal someone else's wife."

Side One - Captain Obvious and the Duh Patrol w/ guitars by Mark Warren and Craig Van Tilbury and Freight Train Annie on vocals

Side Two -Butternut, featuring Damon Fowler and Greg Poulos

Side Three - Ted Lukas and the Misled

Side Four - Steve Connelly and the Lesser Gods

Plus, Talk To Mark, John Q, and Brian Merrill and Jeremy Thomas, and 13 year old guitar prodigy Mike Imbasciani will each play several Clapton songs.

Blind Boys of Alabama, plus The Bird Street Players

As The Blind Boys of Alabama celebrate their many years of continuous harmonizing, it’s a fitting time to ponder their amazing resilience. What has kept them going for so long, and still sounding so great? Rock-solid religious faith certainly helps account for their vibrant longevity. So does their unshakeable conviction that they were put here for the express purpose of singing. But an equally important factor, not always shared by their peers, is the Blind Boys’ open-mindedness. Old-time Gospel music circles are often marked by rigid conservatism and the dismissal of popular music as a worldly temptation of the Devil. The Blind Boys, by contrast, shun worldliness yet eagerly embrace the world, bringing spiritual music to secular audiences in order to spread their message.

As a result, the group has formed fast friendships with an impressive array of musicians -- venerable colleagues and youthful protégés alike— who span several generations and a wealth of genres. Many of these major artists have asked the Blind Boys to guest on their projects, and “Duets” documents the twenty-year history of this rich, eclectic and cohesive interaction. The Blind Boys are sought for their general wisdom, specific input, and intangibly special presence, and it’s important to note that The Blind Boys don’t accept every such invitation. The lyrical content has to be right – not necessarily religious, per se, but spiritual nonetheless. They also have to feel the song and believe that they can put their own stamp on it. Once those criteria are met, the Blind Boys of Alabama are in with enthusiasm, expertise, and soulful commitment
