Hillsborough commmisioners today directed financial planners to review the county's options in the wake of sell-offs of the state-run investment fund.

In just the last month, nervous local government who used the fund for short-term investments of their operating cash began withdrawing funds after reports that about $2-billion in notes backed by subprime mortgages had been downgraded, reducing the balance of the fund from $26-billion to $14-billion.

Last week the Rays baseball team unveiled plans for a new waterfront stadium in downtown St. Petersburg.

The new stadium would be open air and smaller than the existing Tropicana Dome. It would be located on the downtown waterfront- raising lots of questions about land use, dredge and fill of Tampa Bay and transportation.

Thanks to citizen input at a meeting this morning in Tampa, the Hillsborough board of the Metropolitan Planning Commission (MPO) has removed the proposed Brandon bypass highway from consideration -- for now at least.

According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), prescription drug abuse is one of the largest drug problems in the country. Only marijuana and “drug related deaths for both Oxycodone and Hydrocodone in Florida exceed those for heroin.”
