Michael Cannon, Director of Health Care Studies at The Cato Institute, co-wrote a book with Michael Tanner entitled Healthy Competition. The book argues that a healthy medical marketplace, grown from less government regulation, would open up the choices Americans have in health care options. Last fall, the then head of the Department of Children and Families, Lucy Hadi, was threatened with jail, by a Pinellas County Judge for allowing mentally ill inmates to stay in the Pinellas County jail longer than 15 days.
Judges in other Florida counties also weighed motions to do the same. But with few hospital beds available, the state was threatened also with stiff fines for breaking the law.

One hundred twenty City of Tampa full-time employees were notified today that they would be out of a job in three months. Mayor Pam Iorio said this afternoon that an additional 99 vacant positions and 133 part-time and seasonal positions would be eliminated.
