Bill Becker is the executive director of the Presidential Climate Action Network, based in Colorado. The group advocates 300 policies that can be enacted by whoever is elected president – without congressional -approval within his first 100 days in office.

Becker will be in Tampa this Saturday morning speaking as part of the Earth Summit gathering at the University of Tampa's Falk Theater at 11 a.m.

Penguin Classics is partnering with the Union of Concerned Scientists to encourage all aspiring writers and photographers to submit their personal stories and images about global warming for publication in a new online book, Thoreau's Legacy: American Stories about Global Warming. Recent polls show Republican Vern Buchanan with a solid double-digit lead over Democrat Christine Jennings in a rematch of their disputed 2006 Congressional race in Florida’s 13th District.

As Wall Street’s tumble continues, John McCain proposed during last night’s debate a $300 billion plan authorizing the Treasury Secretary to buy the mortgages of homeowners in financial trouble and replace them with more affordable loans.

County administrator to oversee land deals

Last year Pinellas County purchased land from Property Appraiser Jim Smith, prompting rebuke from a grand jury, the dismissal of the county’s attorney and resignation of the county administrator.

Today, the Board of County Commissioners gave the county administrator sole authority to purchase land and enter leases of up to $250,000. The purchase would have to be in line with capital projects that were already approved by the County Commission.

The Pinellas Board of County Commissioners today rejected their staff’s recommendation and voted down an ordinance that would have required developers to build affordable housing. This went against a pledge that each commissioner had made to a large coalition of faith communities.

Regardless of age, race, ideals and party preference, opposition to the Wall Street bailout united several progressive groups and demonstrators who gathered in St. Petersburg on Saturday for a protest and march to City Hall.

On Friday, President Bush signed an $800 billion Wall Street bailout bill shortly after it was passed in the House of Representatives. Of the nine House Democrats from Florida, Tampa-area Rep. With women playing a greater role in active-duty military operations, comes an increasing problem of homelessness among women veterans. This morning in Ybor City, a ribbon-cutting ceremony spotlighted a transitional housing program for homeless female veterans.

The Athena program, located in a historic brick building on Columbus Drive, will provide transitional housing to 16 homeless female veterans.
