A new USA Today/Gallup poll shows nearly 7 out of 10 adults, or 68 percent, say they have a favorable opinion of President-elect Barack Obama; and almost as many, or 65 percent, say they think the country will be better four years from now.
That’s much higher expectations than for either Bill Clinton or George W. Bush after they were first elected. In both cases, slightly more than 50 percent said they thought the country would be better off in four years.

Last week, Floridians approved a measure that will ban same-sex marriage in Florida.

Last week, more than 62 percent of Florida voters supported Amendment 2.
The amendment defined marriage as between one man and one woman and also outlawed recognition of any partnership that is the substantial equivalent of marriage.

Thursday, after nearly 48 hours of delays in counting early votes, Democrat Phyllis Busansky found out that she had defeated incumbent Republican Buddy Johnson to become Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections.
WMNF spoke with Busansky today to get her reaction to the victory and to the issues that came up during the election. Busansky said she feels "Great. Absolutely, totally, great. … It’s a great honor and I’m just very excited about it."

The St. Petersburg Audubon Society has received a $9,000 TogetherGreen national innovation grant to assist volunteers in protecting beach-nesting birds along the Gulf Coast this summer.
This morning, WMNF spoke with Dave Kandz, the conservation chair of the St. Petersburg Audubon Society.
The grant will enable volunteers to protect beach-nesting bird colonies along Gulf Coast beaches beginning in April.

On Friday, President Elect Barack Obama called for swift passage of an economic recovery package. Today, U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa, wrote to Obama encouraging him to support the Job Creation and Unemployment Relief Act, H.R. 7110 that passed the House 264-158 in September.
WMNF asked Castor what that bill would do for Florida, if signed by the president.

After nearly 48 hours of vote counting, Hillsborough County finally knows who its next commissioner will be. Democrat Kevin Beckner soundly defeated incumbent Republican Brian Blair.

Last night the Tampa City Council rejected a long-term franchise agreement with Tampa Electric. T
City Council member Linda Saul-Sena was one of the four to vote against the franchise agreement with TECO.
"I think its so important that we do act locally," she said.
The other members who voted to reject the agreement were John Dingfelder, Mary Mulhern and Joeseph Caetano. Charlie Miranda and Thomas Scott voted in favor of the agreement.
