Earlier this week, reporters for Dow Jones and the Wall Street Journal wrote about an "intense private battle" that had broken out between the Bush White House’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over the publication of a document that could become the legal roadmap for the regulation of greenhouse gas emissions.

Florida has been included in a pilot program that allows schools in compliance with most areas of the No Child Left Behind Act to face less stringent penalties for struggling schools, and design its own methods for improving schools.

Department of Education Secretary Margaret Spellings made the announcement at a news conference in Texas yesterday.

In addition to voting for president this November, Floridians will have the opportunity to vote on several proposed amendments to the state’s Constitution.

Amendment 5 is called the “tax-swap” amendment because it would reduce the property taxes of Floridians in favor of increased sales tax and other taxes.

State Sen. Dave Aronberg is a Democrat from Greenacres in southeast Florida who said he opposes Amendment 5.

The Pinellas County Commission today approved the sale of the Toytown landfill site to a trio of developers. The site could even be the future location of a new stadium for the Rays.

Last week the Rays plans for a waterfront stadium were put on hold. Robert Stewart, chairman of the Pinellas County Commission, asked one of the three partners that will develop the site, whether the Toytown site might be an alternative stadium location.

Entrepreneur creates curbside recycling in St. Pete listen

For years, residents in St. Petersburg, especially environmentally conscious ones, have bemoaned the lack of a curbside recycling program.

With the city refusing to commit to such a service, one private resident has decided to do something about that.

Greg Foster, 22, began St. Pete Recycling Solutions, a subscriber-based recycling program, at the beginning of this year. Currently he says he has more than 600 customers throughout St. Pete and other parts of Pinellas County.

Polls favor McCain, Obama but not Martinez

Another day, another Florida Presidential Poll. Actually, two different polls were released today with two different results.

A Rasmussen poll shows John McCain leading Barack Obama, 48 to 41 percent- Obama with just a 44% approval rating in Florida, down 7 points in the last 8 days.

But a new Public Policy Polling survey shows Obama up by 2 points, 46 to 44 percent. In March, the same poll showed him trailing McCain 50 to 39 percent.

Florida sues Countrywide Financial listen

Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum announced that today that his office has filed a lawsuit against Countrywide Financial, one of the nation’s largest mortgage companies, for allegedly engaging in deceptive and unfair trade policies. Countywide Chief Executive Angelo Mizilo was also named in the lawsuit.
