No punches were pulled today in a debate between three candidates for Pinellas County Sheriff at the Suncoast Tiger Bay Club.
Former deputy sheriff Randall Jones felt so strongly that he wanted a new boss that he ran for Sheriff. Because of state election laws, that means he had to resign from his job. The group Progress Florida today launched a statewide petition campaign urging Gov. Charlie Crist to prevent what they claim are efforts designed to confuse and disenfranchise voters this election.
Those include reports of possible Voters Caging, and the new “No Match, No Vote” law.

At a workshop today, the Tampa City Council discussed expanding setbacks for homeowners who live along the edge of the Hillsborough River.

On Tuesday, an alliance of seven Western states and four Canadian provinces announced a plan for the most far-reaching effort in North America to curb emissions linked to climate change.
The Western Climate Initiative is intended to achieve a 15 percent cut in greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2020. U.S. states in the alliance include Arizona, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and California.

On Nov. 4, Floridians will vote on several amendments to the state’s Constitution, including one forbidding partnership rights for everyone except people in heterosexual marriages.
One lesser known amendment, Amendment 8, would allow counties to raise their sales tax in order to increase community college funding. It was placed on the ballot by the Florida Taxation and Budget Reform Commission.

Florida’s current revenue shortfall is one of the worst in state's history.
Earlier this month, a legislative budget panel, urged by Gov. Charlie Crist, took $672 million from Florida’s Budget Stabilization Fund, which must be paid back within five years.
Legislators will meet again in November to deal with the remaining $1.5 billion shortfall. And next year, the budget shortfall is slated to be more than $3 billion.
