Death penalty acquittal recharges capital punishment debate listen

A South Florida death row inmate was acquitted last week of a 1994 triple murder. Seth Penalver, is now a free man after being also acquitted of armed robbery and armed burglary.
Mark Elliot is the director of Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty. I spoke with him today about what the acquittal means for the future of the death penalty in Florida.

A West Tampa charity is having a hard time running their organization because of some of the city’s codes. Huey Johnson, head of the West Tampa Cultural Society, runs a food truck that trains struggling young people in the neighborhood how to work in restaurants and even run them. He’ll be asking code enforcement officials on Wednesday to cut the community service group some slack.

A Tampa Bay Times poll released today shows that a majority of Tampa Bay residents would be OK with spending tax dollars on light rail in the region.
Fifty-six percent of Hillsborough County residents polled said they would support using public funding for mass transit like light or commuter rail. In Pinellas County 60% said they’d be on board.

A report by the Human Rights Campaign released last month evaluated equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people nationwide. Veterans who don’t have homes this holiday season got a warm meal this afternoon in Tampa. The Hillsborough County Veteran’s Affairs department doled out turkey dinners to about 40 vets, but also took the opportunity to help them get and keep jobs.
Veterans dined ten at a time, starting with this group. Kelly Beaver, a retired sailor in the Navy used to live on the streets. He’s still getting help from the county’s veteran's affairs department, but he said he’s on the road to recovery. ...

Tampa International Airport officials are making plans for future growth and some of the changes could happen pretty soon. The airport’s CEO told Tampa City Council members this morning that rental car facilities will likely be moved in order to free up parking spaces and cut down on road congestion around the main terminal.
