Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin Beckner scored a major victory for not just the LGBT community but fairness for all when he successfully pushed for the repeal of the 2005 ban on "gay pride" on the Hillsborough County Commission.

Beckner also talked land use issues, his vote to support to give tax incentives to retail giant Amazon, and reviving talks about improving the county's transportation needs.

Thursday is national Dump the Pump day meant to draw attention to ways local governments can get people out of their cars and into multi-modal transit. Transportation agencies on both sides of Tampa Bay were getting the message out. At their meeting Thursday Tampa City Council discussed what the Tampa might look like years from now. Representatives from InVision Tampa spoke about their organization’s hopes for the future.

Randy Goer with the Planning Division presented InVision Tampa’s City Center Plan. That’s the development plans for the central business district and the surrounding neighborhoods. Goer said the plan for downtown Tampa is less focused on business and more on residents.

Hillsborough County Commissioners did not approve a policy change that would have banned people running for office from serving on appointed committees Wednesday. Instead, Commissioner Mark Sharpe asked that county staff re-work language to include specific criteria for when a person should be disqualified from sitting on a panel.

Hillsborough County Commissioners unanimously approved Amazon.com as a Qualified Target Industry Business Wednesday, making it eligible for up to $225,000 in local financial support. Another nearly $6 million in tax breaks will be taken up at a meeting in July. Tuesday the Pinellas County Board of Commissioners approved a cooperative agreement between the county and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the re-nourishment of Sunset Beach. The $2.4 million in federal funds will replace sand lost when Tropical Storm Debby impacted the beach last year.
