Before the stand your ground law was enacted in Florida- defendants had to use every reasonable effort to avoid danger- before using deadly force. Council Member Wengay Newton voted to terminate the contract on the Lens Pier project with Michael Maltzan Architecture, the designers of the new development. St. Petersburg officials chose not to conduct early voting for the August primary, but residents can still cast mail-in ballots in person. Newton announced his vote during a press conference at the Supervisor of Elections Office in St. Petersburg, Friday. He encouraged all St. Petersburg residents to vote now.

People furious with George Zimmerman’s not guilty verdict protested on both sides of Tampa Bay Sunday.

About fifty activists chanted and held signs on the four corners of a busy South St. Petersburg intersection early in the afternoon.

Environmental Resource Permit for the new St. Petersburg Pier Approved

An Environmental Resource Permit has been approved by The Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) which will allow for the demolition of the existing St. Petersburg pier and the construction of the new Lens pier.

Even though this permit has been approved, St. Pete still needs to receive federal, state and local authorizations before they can demolish the old pier and begin to build the new one.
