Women's Show - MOLLY IVINS

09/11/04

MOLLY IVINS, one of the nation's wittiest and best-known political pundits and widely syndicated political columnist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, will appear in Sarasota September 11 to talk about the government crackdown on civil liberties in post 9-11 America.

Ivins best-selling book, Molly Ivins Can't Say That Can She?, spent over a year on the New York Times best seller list. Her column appears in over 300 newspapers. Books include Shrub, Bushwhacked, Bushisms, Nothin' But Good Times Ahead, You Got To Dance With Them What Brung You.

Ivins' visit to Sarasota comes at a time when there is increasing concern at the local level over sweeping new federal powers in this so-called "War on Terror" that undermine the Bill of Rights. Last year, the Sarasota City Commission passed a resolution calling for corrections to be made to the anti-terrorism bill - the USA PATRIOT Act - that was rushed through Congress in the aftermath of 9/11.

No one knows more about George W. Bush than Molly Ivins. Molly's bestseller, Bushwhacked: Life in George W. Bush's America, just released in paperback by Vintage Books, is incisive, entertaining, and thoroughly damning, a hilarious, no-holds-barred look at George W. Bush and his administration, and an essential book for understanding the full impact of his presidency. It brings to light the legacy of the Bush tax cut, his environmental record, and the real Bush foreign policy-botched nation building in Kabul and Baghdad, alienation of former allies-and much more.

Following close on the heels of her phenomenally successful Bushwhacked and containing an up-to-the-minute Introduction for the campaign season, Who Let the Dogs In? is political writing at its best, her own personal Hall of Fame of America's most outlandish politicians. It takes us on a wild ride through two decades of political life, from Ronald Reagan, through Big George and Bill Clinton, to our current top dog, known to Ivins readers simply as Dubya.

Ivins will appear Saturday, September 11 at 8:00 p.m. at Van Wezel Hall.
