ARE STANDARDIZED TESTS HURTING FLORIDA'S EDUCATION SYSTEM?

06/14/01

Our guests Joan Kawell, professor of Education at USF, Congressman Jim Davis of Tampa, and Gloria Pipkin of the Florida Coalition for Assessment Reform discussed the impact of standardized tests on education, student's, and teachers. The guests pointed out that standardized tests are used as a punishment device rather than as a method for improving learning. They also said that the curriculum is schools was being cannibalized by "teaching to the test" and that students were being "traumatized" by the process.
