President Bush is traveling to Illinois today to call for limits on medical malpractice awards for patients who are injured by doctors, hospitals and pharmaceuticals. The President says there are too many frivolous lawsuits and those lawsuits are causing doctors and hospitals to limit care. Our guest Frank Clemente who is with the group Public Citizen says that the crisis not as severe as the president claims. In fact the number of medmal lawsuits has been flat for several years and there is not a dramatic increase in damage awards. Clemente says the insurance companies have been raising premiums because the economy was experiencing a downturn and the traditional sources of revenue were being negatively impacted. Clemente says while the President is calling for limits on patient's lawsuits- he's not calling for limits on lawsuits by businesses- which he says file many more frivolous lawsuits than do patients.
