LOOKING FOR THE ANGOLA SETTLEMENT - Radioactivity

01/26/05

Excavations to pinpoint the location of an 1800’s black settlement located along the Manatee River are now underway for the first time. A state historic preservation grant helped to jumpstart a yearlong search for the early black community known as Angola. While field tests are conducted to uncover evidence about a story missing out of the pages of history, a cadre of historians, archaeologists and anthropologists will present talks to the public about the significance of the Angola community comprised of free blacks, escaped slaves and Seminoles. Our guests are part of the exploration team: Dr. Uzi Baram, Anthropologist/Archaeologist at New College and Vickie Oldham is a documentary producer in Manatee County who is credited with reviving interest to search for this lost settlement.
