Gary Wills' book, "Why I Am A Catholic" (Houghton Mifflin) is really a book about the history of democracy inside the Church. Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Wills wrote the book before the current pedophile scandal broke out within the Church. But he says the book is relevant because the scandal's roots go back to the nature of power and the lack of democracy inside Roman Catholicism. In this interview he traced the history of the relationship between the Pope, the laity and the clergy. He says his research shows the early Church operated much more democratically. Wills suggests that there is a trend to more democracy and openness symbolized by the U.S. Catholic Bishop's new approach to the sex scandal which was approved at the recent meeting in Dallas.
