TAMPA MAYOR DICK GRECO'S HISTORIC TRIP TO CUBA08/06/02
In late July Tampa mayor Dick Greco and 19 local business, religious and civic leaders made what many people believe is the first trip to Cuba by an elected Florida mayor in 40 years. Two of the people who accompanied Greco were here at WMNF to discuss the visit and the controversy it engendered. The guests: Patrick Manteiga of the Ybor City-based newspaper La Gaceta and Albert Fox of the Alliance For Responsible Cuba Policy. This discussion touched on everything from the purpose of the trip, the secrecy surrounding it, the status of the island's people and infrastructure, and the group's nearly six hour meeting with Fidel Castro, as well as the prospects for continuation of the U.S. embargo.
