Our guest Robert Glennon is the author of a new book called WATER FOLLIES (Island Press) in which he says that overpumping of our natural aquifers is creating an impending environmental disaster. Glennon, a law professor at the University of Arizona, says too much water is being taken from the aquifer and that the consequences are pollution of groundwater, lowering of the water table, dry lake and river beds, and sinkholes. In addition, private companies are buying up water rights to re-sell massive amounts of groundwater to Americans in the form of bottled spring water. He says groundwater needs to be protected and used wisely in a way that will make the resource sustainable.
