COMMUNITY ACTIVIST RESPONDS TO NEWS THAT PRESIDENT BUSH KNEW KATRINA WAS GOING TO CREATE A DISASTER03/02/06
The Associated press reported today that tapes show that President Bush was fully briefed on Hurricane Katrina's potential for destruction. Video footage obtained by the AP shows the President and Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff being warned about the potential catastrophe. The tape reveals there was plenty of talk about the possibility of the levees being breached, even though the President later said nobody anticipated that happening. Our guest was Curtis Muhammad, co-founder of Community Labor United, a coalition of groups in New Orleans. He said today he's not surprised by the AP reports. But he says it obscures what happened- that the federal government knew of the dangers and did little to stop the deaths of low income black people who were in the disaster area. Muhammad says that people need to be trained in the skills of rebuilding their own communities. By withholding that training the government is consigning people to a dead end future.
