IMMIGRANTS CONTINUE EFFORT FOR LEGALIZATION05/16/06
An organizer for the Plant City-based Immigrants United For Freedum (ILUF) Blanca Gonzalez discussed the President's speech on immigration last night. She said his plan for increased border patrols was not likely to stop people from trying to cross the border illegally. She says the goal of her group is to bring families together- families that have been separated when one member comes to the u.S. loooking for gainful work. Gonzalez said the number of deaths at the border is on the increase because now illegals are trying harder to avoid immigration officers. She says the national focus on enforcement will just cost taxpayers more money and will cause resentment among the majority population. She said a new, high-tech national ID card is not necessary, rather what's needed is driver's licenses, the most widely accepted for of ID in the country.
