HILLSBOROUGH VOTES PUTS PRESSURE ON TAMPA by Mitch E. Perry06/13/06
Hillsborough County Commissions today voted 5-0 to propose a non-binding vote in November’s General Election that will ask all local governments in the County – specifically the City of Tampa – to regulate sexually oriented businesses “to the fullest extent allowed by law.
Most establishements in the County are located within Tampa city limits. The city doesn’t have to abide county ordinances or heed the results of the non-binding referendum.
But Commissioner Ronda Storms has called for the vote to pressure Tampa officials to take regulation of adult businesses more seriously. Tampa officials have said changing city ordinances based on the outcome of the straw vote could undermine city regulations.
The proposed county ordinance would require licenses for dancers and prohibit touching between dancers and customers.
Earlier, the Commission voted to eliminate all impact fee zones . That vote was led by Commissioner Ronda Storms…But was followed up by Kathy Castor offering a substitute motion allowing Ruskin to continue with a no fee zone..But Storms disagreed (roll tape#1 o.q.NOT TO DO IT )
The Commission then agreed to have County Staff study the issue and come back before the Board next month.
