CREATING LIVABLE, WALKABLE COMMUNITIES

06/21/06

Our guest was Dan Burden Senior Urban Designer and Director of Walkable Communities, Inc. He discussed an upcoming workshop June 28th in Tampa on "Making Livable Communities". Burden discussed the components of making communities more pedestrian friendly- slowing traffic, clustering more housing near businesses, making street levels more interesting and conducive to walking, and reversing the trend that's made cities more conducive to automobiles than to people. He discussed some of the great livable communities: Chico, Ca.; Winter Park, Fl.; Dunedin, Fl.; Clearwater Beach, Fl.; Victoria, BC; and Vancouver BC.
