Senator Nelson to support Constitutional Amendment to ban flag desecretation by Mitch E.Perry06/26/06
The U.S. Senate is scheduled to take up a vote on passing a Constitutional Amendment to ban the desecration of the American Flag this week….If the required 2/3rds of senators vote to approve the measure, then it will go to the states, where 3/4ths, or 38 states- must pass it.
The key question in Washington is if there is in fact, the 67 necessary votes for passage.
The chief proponent of the amendment, Utah Republican Orrin Hatch, says he thinks that he has the 67 votes – but West Virginia Democrat Jay Rockefeller, one of the supporters of the amendment, has been out for several months, recovering from back surgery. His aides say he is due to return this week. But if he does not, the amendment bid may fail.
Only 3 Republicans are against the amendment are Utah’s Robert Bennett, Rhode Island’s Lincoln Chafee, and Kentucky’s Mitch McConnell.
There are as many as 14 Democrats who support the bill, including Florida’s own Bill Nelson.
Brian Moore is an independent candidate for U.S. Senate, running against Nelson and whomever the Republicans – probably Katherine Harris- will nominate this September.
He condemns Nelson for his support for this Constitutional Amendment (roll tape#1 o.q. from Senator Nelson)
Senator Nelson’s office did confirm to WMNF that he will be voting for this Constitutional Amendment when it comes up before the Senate. We were told he would speak to us about the issue.
Nelson’s support for the Flag Burning Amendment comes in the same month that he was 1 of only 3 Democrats to jump party lines and vote to repeal the Federal Tax on Inherited estates.
Democratic leaders portrayed the repeal as a sop to the wealthy few that should not have even been debated at all, given other pressing priorities such as rising gasoline prices and the large number of citizens who do not have health insurance. Democrats also contended that the cost of repeal is more than the country can afford in light of already large federal budget deficits.
But that didn’t stop Senator Nelson.
When it comes to flag burning, liberal bloggers on the Internete have attacked New York Senator Hillary Clinton for her support of a law banning Flag Burning. But Clinton does not go as far as supporting a Constitutional Amendment banning such a practice.
Independent Senate candidate Brian Moore says these votes illustrate that Nelson – leading Harris in some polls by as much as 30 percentage points – is an inherently ‘safe ‘ Politician (roll tape#2 o.q.2 peas in a pod)
