Hillsborough Community College looking for local families to take in foreign students by Mitch E. Perry06/30/06
Hillsborough Community College is looking for families in the Tampa Bay Area to host international studies who will be studying at the Campus beginning in August.
It’s part of HCC’s involvement with the Peace Scholarship Program, which is designed to prepare 20 students from Latin American and Carribean countries to learn electronic or manufacturing engineering in Tampa for the next 2 years. The commitment for local families is to host these students would be for 9 months.
Jaime Guerra is with HCC’s CASS Program. The CASS Program is a scholarship agreement between Georgetown University and Hillsborough Community College, and has been in effect for over 20 years. HCC is one of 9 colleges around the U.S. that provides technical training for students who win scholarships. (roll tape#1 o.q.with host families)
There will be 7 woman and 13 men, coming to attend Hillsborough Community College, from ages 18 to 25 …The students are all from rural areas of their home countries, like Guatamala, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico , Haiti and Nicaragua.
HCC’s Jaime Guerra says the idea is to make these young people agents of change within their own communities (roll tape#2 o.q.bring new hope)
