The Southern poverty Law Center is about to release its annual count of hate groups in the United States. In 2004, Florida was number 2 on that list, and according to the center Florida will again be in the top two or three state for 2005. The southern Poverty law center report names 43 active hate groups in Florida. Tampa Bay is home to 5 of these groups---the Jewish defense league, the council of conservative citizens, the national alliance, the national association for the advancement of white people, and a neo-confederate group that has chapters throughout the state--the League of the South. The league of the South was the group with the largest number of chapters in the state, 13 compared to 8 branches of the Ku Klux Klan in Florida
