THE GOVERNOR SIGNS CONTROVERSIAL MODIFICATION TO EVERGLADES FOREVER ACT05/22/03
Governor Jeb Bush has signed a bill that environmentalists say will delay the cleanup of the Everglades. The governor says this bill is the next logical step in the cleanup process. Our guest, Eric Draper, who is a lobbyist for the Audubon Society says that the bill is a bad idea and a victory of the sugar industry over the environment. Draper says that runoff from sugar cane fields is largely responsible for the phosphorous overload which is causing an explosion of non-indigenous plants to crowd out the plants which are crucial to the Everglades ecosystem.
