However, a press release by the Gallagher campaign sent out this afternoon says he will make a statement about his campaign Thursday morning in Orlando.
The Herald reported that Gallagher has spoken with several GOP state heavyweights, such as former state party chairmen Tom Slade and Al Cardenas in recent weeks, about the viability of his candidacy.
In most polls, Gallagher trails his main opponent, Attorney General Charlie Crist, by at least 20 percentage points.
The Herald reports that there is pressure on Gallagher to step down before the September 5th primary election, as a way to enable some of Gallagher’s financial donors to be able to give to Crist and get in his good graces.
Aubrey Jewett is a professor of Political Science at the University of Central Florida. He says there’s a couple of issues that have led to Charlie Crist’s dominance over Gallagher (roll tape#2 o.q.)
The Miami Herald article reports that Gallagher will NOT decide on whether he is still committed to the race until new polls assess how well his latest round of ads are doing at moving voters.
If Gallagher leaves the race, his name would still appear on the ballot
