Rod Smith on Canceled Debate by Mitch E. Perry09/01/06
Rod Smith is now talking about why he did NOT want to participate in a 2nd state wide televised debate with Jim Davis.
Tuesday night’s originally scheduled debate was ‘rained out’, so to speak, with the threat of Hurricane Ernesto approaching South Florida.
On Wednesday, the two campaigns were negotiating to conduct the 2nd debate tonight, at 8PM, from West Palm Beach. This morning Smith spoke about why he canceled by first saying that 3 previous debates dates were rejected by Davis.
Smith then said he wasn’t certain how many viewers would be tuning in on a Friday night to watch a political debate – and that was before he heard that Miami and Broward county stations were going to only carry it on a tape delayed basis.
According to the St. Petersburg Times website, Smith says his camp was originally asking for earlier debates because what if something were to go wrong at the end. He said, “. We were ready to debate them earlier this week. But we have to push to get out the vote this weekend, we've got to motivate our voters and get folks excited."
The move for Smith NOT to want to debate tonight comes as a surprise to USF ST. Pete Political Science Professor Daryl Paulson (roll tape#1 o.q.to jim Davis)
