Straight was a drug treatment program which operated in the Bay area from the late 1970s until 1993. It was an intensive program primarily for teens and young adults. But many survivors of the program say that the “treatment involved physical, mental and emotional abuse. Straight, Inc. has gone out of business, but similar drug treatment programs still exist. Our guests: Michael Sherman, Bob Patterson, Richard Bradbury and Jeff Herschel are affiliated with S.A.F.E.T.Y. (Survivors and Friends for the Ethical Treatment of Youth). They described their experiences inside Straight and a similar program which still operates in Orlando. They discussed lawsuits against Straight, how parents can recognize an abusive drug treatment program, and an upcoming convention of S.A.F.E.T.Y.
