TERROR IN THE SERVICE OF THE CIA

07/22/03

THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT SADDAM HUSSEIN WAS A BRUTAL LEADER WHOSE FOLLOWERS CARRIED OUT THE KILLING, TORTURE AND DISFIGUREMENT OF HIS OPPONENTS. . . BUT BRUTAL TREATMENT OF POLITICAL ENEMIES IS NOT CONFINED TO IRAQ’S FORMER GOVERNMENT. MANY U.S.-BACKED GOVERNMENTS, MILITARY LEADERS AND EVEN EMPLOYEES ARE GUILTY OF THE SAME KIND OF ACTIVITIES. EXAMPLES OF SUMMARY EXECUTION AND TORTURE CAN BE FOUND UNDER U.S.-BACKED GOVERNMENTS IN CHILE, IRAN, BRAZIL, EL SALVADOR, GUATEMALA, SOUTH VIETNAM, INDONESIA, TURKEY AND COLOMBIA.

TWO WEEKS AGO THE ASIA TIMES NEWSPAPER CARRIED THE OBITUARY OF 78 YEAR OLD TONY POSHEPNY, A DECORATED FORMER OFFICIAL IN THE CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY. . . HE DIED IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AFTER A LONG ILLNESS. DURING THE 1970S AND 1980S POSHEPNY CARRIED OUT COVERT MILITARY OPERATIONS AGAINST LEFT WING INSURGENTS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA. TONY POE, AS HE WAS KNOWN, ORDERED THAT THE EARS BE CUT OFF OF POLITICAL ENEMIES IN SOUTHEAST ASIA.HE EVEN HAD THE HEADS OF POLITICAL ENEMIES CUT OFF AND USED TO TERRORIZE THE LIVING. FOR THIS HE BECAME INFAMOUS THROUGHOUT SOUTHEAST ASIA.

OUR GUEST, FREELANCE JOURNALIST RICHARD EHRLICH WROTE TONY POE’S OBITUARY FOR THE ASIA TIMES.
