Busansky calls for investigation of "Foley 5" by Mitch E. Perry10/03/06
As controversy continues to surround the Republican House leadership involving the Mark Foley incident, Democrats nationwide are doing what they can to make the most of the situation politically.
Yesterday, 2 Republican candidates for Congress in Florida, South Florida incumbent Clay Shaw and in Sarasota, Vern Buchanon, both donated money received from Mark Foley’s Political Action Committee to charity, and Charlie Crist said today he would do the same for the $500 dollars he received from Foley’s Pac.
In Florida’s 9th District, Democratic Congressional candidate Phyllis Busansky is calling for a crackdown on the so-called “Foley 5 – that being House leaders such as the Speaker, Denny Hastert, as well as the Republican National Committee Congressional Chairman, New York’s Tom Reynolds, and others, to be investigated. (roll tape#1 “it’s a major problem)
The $100,000 dollar figure Busansky referenced is campaign donations that her Republican opponent, Gus Bilirakis, received from the Republican National Committee, led by their Chairman , Tom Reynolds, as well as monies collected from a Dennis Hastert fundraiser, and money from Hastert’s Political Action Committee, or PAC.
Bilarakis has also received funding from House Majority Leader John Boehner’s PAC, and from Illinois Republican John Shimkus PAC – both those republicans are also associated with the investigation of Mark Foley, hence the nickname of the Foley 5.
Liz Hattos is the spokesperson for the Gus Bilirakis Congressional Campaign. She says Gus Bilirakis supports House Speaker Hastert and the other top Republican officials (roll tape#2 o.q.full truth here)
The fact that Bilirakis’ press spokesperson – and not the candidate himself spoke to WMNF about the Mark Foley situation, is problematic, as far as Democrat Phyllis Busansky is concerned (roll tape#3 o.q.but where is Gus?)
So far Bilirakis has yet to agree to a debate with Busansky, fueling her frustration about what she says is a lack of accountability on the part of the former State Representative.
His press spokesperson, Liz Hattos, emphasizes that Bilrakis condemns Mark Foley for his internet activity with Congressional pages (roll tape#4 o.q.let’s move on)
But Phyllis Busansky says that’s not good enough. And she says that not only is campaign contributions from Mark Foley – which Bilirakis did not receive – tainted, but also any money from the so called Foley 5 (roll tape#5 o.q.be accountable)
Meanwhile, Denny Hastert told Rush Limbaugh today not only is not going to quit, he plans on campaigning for Republican Representatives in “thirty something districts before Election Day.
Over the weekend, John Kerry came to Tampa for a private fundraiser for Busansky. The Busansky campaign would not tell WMNF how much that fundraiser raised.
