Samm SImpson to be in WEDU Debate by Mitch E. Perry10/18/06
Today it was announced that Samm Simpson, the Democratic candidate for Congress against Pinellas County Republican Bill Young, will be included in an upcoming debate on public television in the Tampa Bay Area.
Sampson and her allies had been hounding the local PBS affiliate in Tampa, WEDU, to include her in the debates that the station will host in the coming weeks. (roll tape#1 o.q.I’m grateful)
WEDU will carry debates with the candidates for Chief Financial Officer, Attorney General, and had scheduled 4 other local Congressional races – in Florida’s 5th, 9th 11th and 13th districts.
But not the 10th, which is where Bill Young has ruled the roost since the 1970’s.
An invitation has been made to Bill Young to participate, but WEDU officials say his office has not replied back. Democratic Congressional candidate in the 10th District, Samm Simpson says she isn’t really certain why the station didn’t include her race as worthy of inclusion, but says looking forward to it now happening – with or without Congressman Young (roll tape#2 o.q.really what this was about)
WMNF attempted to get official comment from WEDU about the reversal on the Simpson-Young televised debate. We did not hear back from anybody from the station by airtime.
