UPCOMING VOTE IN PINELLAS ON CHARTER AMENDMENTS

10/26/06

This segment featured guests from local governmnets in Pinellas County who are concerned about an upcoming proposal on the ballot to change the county charter. They say that residents of Pinellas have not been given enough information about how the proposals would shift power from local communities to County government. Our guests were Janice Miller, Vice Mayor of Oldsmar (813-854-3121); Robin Saenger, Tarpon Springs Commissioner (727) 938-3711; Renee Flowers, St. Petersburg City Council member (727) 893 7117) and Bill Jonson, Clearwater City Council member (727-562-4050). They discussed their position on the amendments, what it would do to annexation, the use of government money 9on both sides) to sway voters and the proposed elimination of the "dual referendum" which gives local governments a check and balance on any countywide vote that would specifically affect a local community.
