GOP "Robo " calls anger voters by Mitch E. Perry11/06/06
Over the weekend, complaints started being registered by voters, who received so called ‘robo calls’ being done by the National Republican Campaign Committee that denigrate Democrats.
The calls begin by saying that they are calling with information about the specific Democratic candidate, and then provides negative information about him or her. . This is one such ad being used in Illinois, against Democrat Tammy Duckworth, an injured Iraq veteran running as a Democrat .. (roll tape#1 o.q.thank you for your time)
And this is a similar call to citizens in New York’s 19th Congressional District, where former Orleans music star John Hall is running as a Democrat against Republican Sue Kelly (roll tape#2 o.q..org)
Citizens in Sarasota have been complaining about receiving similar calls criticizing Christine Jennings.
The calls are a direct violation of FCC rules, which require that the caller identify themselves early on in the call.
The Left leaning blog Talking Points Memo Muckraker reported today that the firm conducting the calls is Conquest Communications. A review of their independent expenditures over the past week shows Conquest is active in 20 different House races.
Meanwhile, The National Republican Congressional Committee agreed to stop placing automated telephone calls to New Hampshire residents on the federal do-not-call list today.
Bob Fertik is with the blog Democrats.com. He has been sending out e-mail messages to as many people as possible to get the word out about these calls (roll tape#1 o.q.anymore)
That jail reference was to James Tobin from the Republican National Committee, who encouraged operatives to make nonstop hang-up calls to tie up Democratic phone lines on Election Day in New Hampshire in 2002, as Democrats.com member Bob Fertik elaborates(roll tape#2 o.q. on the Republican Party)
