THE CAMPAIGN TO STOP TRU GREEN CHEMLAWN FROM USING WHAT ENVIRONMENTALISTS SAY ARE DANGEROUS PESTICIDES

11/15/06

According to our guest, Ashley Schaeffer of the Toxics Action Network: "Area residents placed phone calls to the local office of TruGreen ChemLawn to ask that they discontinue their use of pesticides that are known possible carcinogens, offer a safe, non-toxic lawn-care program without the use of synthetic fertilizers, stop using children to market their products, disclose all ingredients in their pesticide products, and protect workers while phasing out pesticides.

“ChemLawn is knowingly using pesticides that are possible carcinogens and that put our families at risk, said Ashley Schaeffer, organizer for Toxics Action Center’s Refuse to Use ChemLawn campaign. “When customers contract with ChemLawn, they believe they are signing up for a plush, green lawn. What many customers do not know is that they are signing up for a program that exposes their children, pets and water supplies to an arsenal of toxic pesticides.

"A growing pool of research links exposure to the pesticides used by TruGreen ChemLawn to nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and headaches and chronic illnesses like lymphoma, leukemia, bladder cancer, and learning disabilities. Seventeen of 32 (53%) pesticide products used by TruGreen ChemLawn include ingredients that are possible carcinogens, as defined by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)."

ChemLawn must be stopped

I can't stand that my entire neighborhood uses this poison all over their lawns. Not to mention, when it rains, the poison runs down into the wetlands behind our houses. People are so obsessed with their lawns - even at the expense of their children's health and the environment.
