Sigrid Tidmore, executive director of the Patel Foundation for Global Understanding joined Dr. Carol Roberts and Rob Lorei for this edition of the Alternative Health program to discuss "The Healthy Together Initiative".
According to Tidmore: "The State of Florida was ranked 41st in America’s 2006 Health Rankings Study, a dismal honor considering the United States already ranks low among developed nations. Organized by the Patel Foundation for Global Understanding, a group of about 75 regional, multi-disciplinary leaders (including CreativeTampaBay) came together on Jan. 26, 2007 to discuss how to address these critical health indicators. The attendees took inventory of their regional assets, and identified “who else” needed to be part of creating systemic change. The result was the formation of HEALTHY TOGETHER – a new and innovative Coalition with the goal of turning Tampa Bay into a “Wellness Mecca” by affording residents, workers, students, and visitors an environment where they can be safe, healthy and productive.
In the Jan. 15 issue of the BUZZ, we discussed how the Healthy Cities global initiative goes far beyond healthcare to build liveable communities ( click here for link ). HEALTHY TOGETHER will follow the designs of this international program with an emphasis on those factors that build healthy lifestyles. A Steering Committee is meeting regularly with the intention of rolling out a plan by March 30.
The initial Coalition consists of over 150 volunteers representing health care institutions, businesses, schools/colleges/universities, cultural institutions, mental health organizations, non-profits, law enforcement, housing & planning, transportation, environmental, economic development, government and the media. Organizations or individuals who would like to register to begin receiving information about how to become involved in the Coalition should send their contact information to Healthy@Healthy-Together.org."
