Transfer Waste Station not welcomed by Seminole Heights residents
The City of Tampa has plans for a site in the Seminole Heights District
The City of Tampa has already approved funding for a new Waste Transfer Station in the Seminole Heights/East Tampa area of town. But apparently some local citizens donât want it.
According to David McCary, the Cityâs Director of Solid Waste, the facility will duplicate the services that are currently only available to city residents at McKay Bay, South of Ybor City (roll tape#1 o.q.âas wellâ)
The facility property would be at 22nd Street and Sligh, and would be open 7 days a week.
Although the City Council has already approved $275,000 for the project, McCary said that there are still financial challenges before the project can go forward, such as how much construction costs.
He was then severely questioned by the Councilman whose District encompasses the proposed transfer station â Thomas Scott (roll tape#2 o.q.âother areasâ)
McCary said the city had done a survey to determine where the site should be.
And he disagreed with those who want to call the area a dump, saying it will be an excellent facility that the public should love (roll tape#3 o.q.âfor the communityâ)
But Councilman Scott said most of the residents who reside in the neighborhood donât share McCaryâs joy for it â and he needs to convince them otherwise (roll tape#4o.q. East Tampa â)
Later, a couple of residents spoke about their dissatisfaction with the facility.
Rick Feiffer spoke on behalf of the Old Seminole Heights Neighborhood Association.
He said, contrary to published reports, there were 140 people present at a meeting that McCary had with Seminole Heights residents earlier this year. And, according to Feiffer, McCary was successful in converting only 1 person to now support the waste transfer station (roll tape#5 o.q.âthat that can be doneâ)
And there was this comment from this unidentified resident (roll tape#6 o.q.âjump up and downâ)
There will be a public workshop on the proposed Transfer Station in Seminole Heights..That will take place on Monday, June 18thcomments powered by Disqus
