Miami reneges, won't give land to Umoja Village
Last year, homeless activists in Miami took over vacant land and set up a shantytown called the Umoja Village.
Three months ago a fire destroyed it.
Last Thursday the Miami City Council voted unanimously to convey the land to residents and organizers of the Umoja Village called Take Back the Land. But in an apparent reversal, the City now says they will put out a request for proposals to develop affordable housing on the land.
Today WMNF spoke with Max Rameau from Take Back the Land, and began by asking him to describe the Umoja Village. He said it grew out of a severe shortage of affordable housing in Miami-Dade County and especially in the Liberty City neighborhood.
