A LABOR PERSPECTIVE ON PRESIDENT BUSH'S IMMIGRATION REFORM PLANS

01/13/04

Monica Russo is president of the Service Employees International Union Local 1199 in South Florida. She says agrees with President Bush that something needs to be done to recognize the contributions that undocumented immigrants are making to our society. But she also says the President's plan amounts to nothing more than a continuation of guest worker programs of the past. She says what workers need are some job protection from employers who use immigrant worker's lack of documents and she warns that the temporary status of three years (being offered by Bush) will do little to lessen the exploitation of undocumented immigrants.
