Lobbyists, officials mingle at League of Cities Conference08/17/07 Seán Kinane
WMNF Drive-Time News Friday | Listen to this entire show:
This weekend in Orlando is the annual Florida League of Cites Conference, a taxpayer-funded gathering of elected officials.
An article in yesterday’s Orlando Sentinel drew attention to a number of events at the conference that are paid for by lobbyists and special interest groups.
The article said, “… federal and state lawmakers recently approved legislation aiming to limit such gifts from lobbyists” but that “local officials are not bound by the same restraints.”
WMNF contacted Temple Terrace Mayor Joe Affronti earlier today while he was at the Florida League of Cities Conference and asked him if he thought this represented unethical behavior.
Affronti said that the conference offers many benefits to public employees.
St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker did not return our phone call by airtime.
