Tampa Area Congresswoman Kathy Castor said today’s announcement that Alberto Gonzalez had resigned was "long overdue."
San Francisco Bay Area Democratic Congressman George Miller, in Tampa today to join Castor in an event , said ”hallejulah.”
Those comments seemed to reflect the sentiment of Democrats across the country. Among Republicans, the sentiment is more ambivalent – as it was among Florida’s GOP congressional delegation.
Sen. Mel Martinez said Gonzalez had always conducted himself with honesty, dedication and integrity.
But Polk County Rep. Adam Putnam has been a fierce critic. “The Department of Justice now has the opportunity to benefit from fresh leadership," he said today.
"What the American people need right now is an effective, independent attorney general who will be undistracted in his or her efforts to enforce our laws, secure our borders, and vigorously prosecute the war against militant Islamist jihadists."
Florida’s other senator, Democrat Bill Nelson said: “We have an urgent need to restore credibility at the Justice Department. My hope is President Bush’s new pick will take politics out of enforcing the law.”
Nelson was one of just six Democratic senators who voted to confirm Gonzalez as attorney general back in early 2005.
