This is Banned Books Week, as labeled by the American Library Association.

Earlier this year, the organization listed the Most Challenged Books of the Year. They include two novels by Toni Morrison: Beloved and The Bluest Eye.

Also on the list is Athletic Shorts, by teen fiction writer Chris Crutcher. Crutcher’s newest novel, Deadline, is about a high school senior who learns he has a fatal illness which allows him only a year to live.

But the author handles the dark subject with humor.

WMNF spoke to Crutcher today about his new novel, and about his books frequently being banned.

Crutcher also acknowledges that it hasn’t been the worst thing for his career in having his books banned.

You can learn about Banned Books Week by going to the the American Library Association’s website at ala.org.
