Speak Up Tampa Bay sues Hillsborough County
Ten days after the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners voted to cut its funding, organizers behind the county’s public access channel Speak Up Tampa Bay announced they are going to court to try to reverse that decision.
Today begins the new fiscal budget year. And with that, Speak Up Tampa Bay, also known as the Tampa Bay Community Network, is soon to feel the pinch of being $355,000 lighter in their finances.
The Board voted 4-3 last month to deny the channel any funding from county budget. The channel also receives funding from the city of Tampa and other sources.
David Snyder is an attorney representing Speak Up Tampa Bay, and one producer, Gene Adler.
Stephen Todd with the Hillsborough County’s Attorney’s official, did return WMNFs phone call later today. Although he would not go on tape, he did tell us that “Speak Up is one of many organizations effected by budget cuts statewide. The county has had to cut well over 400 positions and cut its assistance to other organizations to balance the budget this year…this is one of many organizations that have been impacted by those cuts”
WMNF attempted to speak with Renee Lee, the attorney for Hillsborough County, but she was unavailable for comment.comments powered by Disqus
